Everyone who lives in Florida knows the spine-chilling feeling of crawling out of bed and throwing on a t-shirt and a pair of shorts, only to step out the front door and be hit in the face with air that is below 70 degrees. The cold weather can surely take a toll on any Floridian who isn’t prepared for or used to the change. There are some key steps to take to make sure to survive the long, harsh Winter that Floridians experience.

“The worst thing about living in Florida is depending on that nice warm weather and, without warning, having to endure freezing temperatures for who-knows-how-long,” CCHS student Jack Frost said.

North Face ski jackets are a must have. They give so much insulation and really keep in the body warmth; there is no chance that anyone will be able to feel the 65 degree air when wearing one of these babies. Another Florida-Winter essential that will really come in handy is a pair of Ugg boots. Nothing keeps those little piggies warm like a nice layer of sheepskin and animal cruelty. Don’t forget to wear matching Ugg earmuffs and gloves for that extra warmth and outfit coordination.

“I keep an emergency coat in my trunk,” CCHS student Snow Flake said. “I just really like to be prepared for winter.”

One of the most useful pieces of equipment to help someone survive these harsh times is a portable hot cocoa maker. The key to being warm is warming from the inside out. Not only does hot cocoa taste delicious, it feels like a hug in a cup. With hot cocoa always ready to go, one is guaranteed to make it through Florida’s cold season.

Surviving the long winter is bound to be a struggle, however, it can be a little more bearable with the help of a nice knit beanie. Ears are very sensitive to cold weather, and beanies help to keep them nice and toasty. Not only are the a nice accessory to keep warm, they also add a little something extra to a cute winter outfit.

“I have a large collection of about 15 beanies, and my goal for the small amount of time that it is cold is to wear as many of them as possible,” CCHS student Frost Bite said. “In the last 3 days I got to wear 8 which is pretty good.”

These tips are sure to help any Floridian stay warm but the most tried and true way to keep warm during this trying time is to just lay in bed, surrounded by blankets and blankets, until the 3 days of this frozen anguish blows over. The important thing to remember is that it’ll be 90 degrees again soon enough and everyone will be wishing for it to be cold, so appreciate it while it’s here.
