The Golden Globes

Each year Hollywood stars from all over the world gather in one prominent location to be a part of one of the largest award shows on the planet: The Golden Globes. The Golden Globes is an event sponsored through the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) and has grown from an extremely informal 1944 ceremony to a massive event. This particular award show focuses on movies, television shows, and one category judging the musical scores within a film. Excitement arises through the pre-award show in which A-list celebrities get their chance to walk the red carpet and be interviewed on all of their accomplishments. This year, the top old but legendary stars, as well as some of the top new faces of Hollywood come out to enjoy the experience.

Since their first show in 1944 the HFPA has repeatedly held the event in January right after the new year.  The association has 93 members and vote on the winners based on personal opinion of the performance. Interestingly enough, most of the members are international journalists that are stationed in Southern California.

This year, the commotion surrounding the event was just as immense as usual, maybe even more so. The nominations given were flawless, there were many top competitors. Fans were debating all over social media about who would take home the trophies, not knowing if the association would even be able to pick a winner with the talent displayed. One category known as best actress in a motion picture comedy had nominations from top stars such as Melissa McCarthy, Jennifer Lawrence, and Amy Schumer. However, some winners were discussed very skeptically on social media. Along with that, one of the stellar moments of the award show was when Lady Gaga walked by Leonardo Dicaprio; he made a strange face and as a result even had a gif made out of it only seconds after. When questioned in the “post globe drama recap” he claimed it was an accident but commented to the press in a way that may have been perceived as unconventional. With the drama amplified this year, next year is predicted to be even “juicier”.

Each year, an award known as the Cecil B. DeMille Award is given out. This award is particularly special because it recognizes a person’s excellence in all of the film industry. Previous winners of this award include Al Pacino, Elizabeth Taylor, and Robert De Niro. This year, the award went to Denzel Washington who rightfully won due to his documented success in front and behind the camera. Washington made multiple statements about his honor and pride in receiving this award.

Next year’s Golden Globes has a lot to live up to as the film industry continues to grow, progress, and strengthen. The HFPA is probably already gearing up for the year of talented movie watching ahead.
