After school on Monday and Tuesday, the senior class officers gathered in room 4107 to begin evaluations for hosts of the annual senior variety show.

“Host tryouts are going well so far,” senior class president Jessica Less said. “We finished day one of tryouts and had a good turnout with very funny acts. We’re all looking forward to seeing the final acts and being able to pick our hosts.”

After the hosts are selected, auditions will be held for acts ranging from singing to dancing. This event is brought with anticipation every year, as it gives students the chance to showcase their skills under the limelight.

But the excitement for the variety show wasn’t limited to class officers. The feeling was also present among those who auditioned for the coveted spots as hosts.

“I auditioned because I always wanted to be an act but believe it or not I’m kinda shy… But I can easily make people laugh with some friends and a few jokes,” senior Rebecca Smitherman said.

With the advisory of co-directors Mr. Pichardo and Mrs. Shea, the chosen hosts will work for the next three months in preparation for opening night. The show, while a lively and entertaining event, is the product of much hard work put forth by these individuals.

“You have to dedicate yourself from now until December to rehearse and to write fifteen different skits for our little show,” Mr. Pichardo said. “So once you commit to [be a] host – if you get chosen – you have a lot to do.”

The amount of effort put in has shown in past years. The show gives students the chance to outlet their creativity in a fun and supportive environment, and this year is sure to bring a unique twist to the production.

“Every year we try to do something new for the variety show,” Pichardo said. “Last year we used a giant screen in the background, and our feature song was ‘Rocketman.’ So we try to do something different… something that stands out and draws the crowd back again the next day.”

After two days of auditions and evaluations, the senior variety show hosts were chosen and tagged during their second period classes. Among them were Isabella Tocci, Emily Miranda, Juliette Polanco, Matthew Plonskier, Jonah Sanchez and Jakob Wolk.

“I’m so excited that I got chosen to be a variety show host and I’m really happy about my co-hosts,” Wolk said. “Overall I think all of us embody unique aspects of our senior class that we can incorporate into the show.”

Although the variety show is only in its beginning stages, the excitement is palpable among the senior class.

“I’m very excited for variety show because it’s the biggest fundraiser class office holds in all four years,” Less said. “It’s something that’s always been talked about, so it’s crazy to think that we’re finally in senior year and preparing for the show. I can’t wait to see how it turns out.”
