The Cooper City High JV played against one of their biggest rivals on Wednesday, September 27. The Cowboys traveled to Western High School, facing the Wildcats, in what they knew was going to be a very difficult game. The Cowboys had been practicing very hard for this game, knowing that they had to step up their game in order to win.

In the first half, the Western High Wildcats came out strong and tried to establish momentum and possession of the ball early. Touchdown after touchdown was scored, building a substantial lead at halftime, but the Cowboys kept their heads held up high and showed no signs of giving up. The Cowboys had nice plays in the first half, which led to chances to score, but Western’s defense was able to hold them. With Western having most of the possession in the first half, it gave them control of the game, which had made the game difficult for the Cowboys. Yet it was still possible to come back in the second half if they could find a way to rally with points and get touchdowns. In order for that to happen, they needed both their offense and defense to play at a high level from the beginning to the end of the second half.

Freshman Brandon Morrissey had a very big impact on this game, helping the Cowboys get their heads back in the game. Though the Cowboys had played better defense in the second half, only allowing 13 points compared to the 28 that were scored on them in the first, they still hadn’t found a great amount of rhythm to help build on for their offense. The Cowboys were able to score three points and use this game to help motivate them for future games. Brandon O’Malley was able to score a field goal from 25 yards out, securing the three points for the Cowboys.

“I feel like the team has really improved since we first started practicing, and playing for this team prepares us for varsity by learning how to be a good teammate, good leader, and an overall good football player,” sophomore Christian Moreno said. “Now that the first game is behind us, all we can do is improve from it. Practicing is the only thing that can prepare us for the rest of the season, we need to stay physically and mentally tough throughout the whole season.”

Final score: Cooper City 3, Western 41
