When perusing the radio airwaves these days, it’s inevitable that you will come across rapper/singer-songwriter Nicki Minaj. From her controversial lyrics to her eye-popping style, she has become an unstoppable presence in the rap industry. Discovered by rapper Lil’ Wayne, and signed to his record label “Young Money”, she is slated to release her first album Pink Friday on November 23rd in the United States.

“Nicki Minaj is a perfect example of the new generation of Hip Hop,” sophomore Shannon Allen said. “She is one of the only rappers in recent years that is able to rival the male segment of the rap industry.”

Minaj has made a name for herself not only with her own hit singles, but also through collaborations with other artists. She has appeared on such distinctive tracks as Sean Kingston’s “Letting Go” and Trey Songz, “Bottoms Up”.

Her wide vocal range allows her to assume a diverse range of styles that has differentiated her from the competition. She raps through a variety of whimsical voices that give her an unparalleled approach and uniqueness. Deemed “Harajuku Barbie”, Nicki has captivated an audience of fans that haven’t seen a strong female presence in rap music since the days of Lil Kim and Eve, whom she is often compared to. Minaj views the comparisons as compliments, being that these female rappers paved the way for her.

“Nicki Minaj is a fierce entity,” Allen said. “I respect the fact that she stays true to herself and doesn’t let what other people say influence her music.”

Minaj’s unique style is not only radiated through her voice but also through her personal fashion sense. The futuristic ensembles she dons and the chromatic collection of signature wigs she wears play a major part in the branding of Nicki Minaj: the entertainer.

“Nicki Minaj is as outgoing as Lady Gaga in terms of work ethic,” sophomore Aicha Fall said. “They have unique styles in the way they dress on a daily basis.”

In the past year, Minaj has become a powerful idol to her followers. Her female fans are known as “Barbies” and her male fans “Ken Barbies”. Minaj feels it is necessary to not exclude herself from any type of fan regardless of social stereotypes.

“She is popular because she raps about all aspects of life and embraces everyone no matter who you are,” Allen said.

With her fame growing stronger every day, Minaj has established a solid image that her fans as well as outsiders can relate to and appreciate. Minaj is overcoming the barriers and stigmas of women in the rap game, rewriting it in the process.
