The tension rose in the Cooper City High School gym as the players walked out onto the court. Both teams stood on their side of the net and prepared for the game to start, spiking the ball over and over again. With five minutes left in the match, the girls ran into their huddles and had their ritual pep-talk before walking out onto the court again. The girl’s varsity volleyball team faced off against the McArthur High School on Tuesday, September 19, hoping to take home a win.

The Cowboys came out strong and were able to dominate the first set. Senior Megan Hernandez was able to obtain ten kills, making the opposing team lose their footing. The Mustangs scored few points, while the Cowboys were constantly putting points up on the scoreboard. The set ended quickly because of the Cowboys’ determination, winning with a score of 25-8.

The win from the first set gave Cooper City a huge amount of confidence, increasing their drive and determination to win even more. The set was closer this time, with the Mustangs trying to retaliate and score as many points as possible. However, Cooper City held their ground and didn’t allow McArthur to surpass them. Sophomore Kaitlyn Anthony had four kills, which contributed to the Cowboys’ win. The tension rose between the two teams during the match, but Cooper City pushed through and won the set with a score of 25-19.

The match was coming close to an end, with Cooper City in the lead and dominating. The third set was extremely similar to the second set, with both teams fighting for the win. The Mustangs were able to score a good amount of points, but that didn’t stop the Cowboys from scoring more. Senior Sam McVay was able to make 11 assists, helping more players score points. The Cowboys energy never dropped and they were able to win their third set with a score of 25-17.

“Playing this sport has always been great,” McVay said. “But my teammates were the ones to make this an amazing experience.”

The girls were ecstatic over their win, which benefitted their team. They had smiles on their faces and hugged each other, overjoyed that they had defeated another good team. The girls look forward to their season and hope to continue winning their games.
