As the girls headed into their last week of games, they started to lose players to injury and other things. Missing some key players, the Cowboys had to step up their game. The team was scheduled to play South Broward, a rather competitive team, that the Cowboys could not keep up with.

On Tuesday, January 23, the girls varsity basketball team took on the South Broward Bulldogs at South Broward High School. South Broward came out very strong, dominating the first quarter and essentially the rest of the game. South Broward was able to take the lead very early in the game and end the game with a score of 61-21.

South Broward dominated the game very early on. They made multiple steals and trapped Cooper City many times, leading to a lot turnovers for the Cowboys. Junior Isabella Wisler was able to receive a pass in the paint and make a layup, gaining the Cowboys two points. The Bulldogs dominated the game and had possession of the ball the majority of the game.

The Cowboys were able to get the ball down the court and find Wisler who had an open three, gaining the Cowboys another three points. The Bulldogs were able to capitalize off of the Cowboys mistakes and make multiple three point shots. Cooper City was able to move the ball down the court and Kassandra Espinosa was fouled as she went up, earning the Cowboys two free throw shots and giving them two more points. By the time the first quarter came to an end, the Bulldogs were able to put themselves ahead by 13 points.

As the second quarter started, South Broward continued to steal the ball and cause multiple turnovers, as well as scoring plenty of points. Kia Keppel was able to receive a pass in the paint while she was unguarded. She made a lay up and put another two points on the board for Cooper City. The Bulldogs were constantly getting through the Cowboys defense and putting up easy layups and easy points.

The Cowboys were able to find Espinosa, who was able to drive the ball in and put up a couple more points for the Cowboys. South Broward was able to put another 27 points on the board in the second quarter, giving them a comfortable lead over the Cowboys. The first half ended with a score of 47-11, with the Bulldogs in the lead.

After half time, a much needed break for the Cowboys, both teams went at it again battling for any points they could get. Wisler was able to receive a pass that she would later put up for another two points. The Cowboys were able to keep the Bulldogs to just scoring nine points, six of which came from two three pointers. Espinosa was able to drive the ball in and make another layup, ending the third quarter with a score of 56-19.

At the beginning of the fourth quarter, South Broward began to put some of the second string players in the game. Freshman Kristina Walker was the only player to put points up on the board in the fourth quarter, bringing the game to an end and finishing with a score of 61-21.

“We were missing a couple players which did hurt us in the end,” sophomore Kaia Keppel said. “South Broward is a tough team to play and they definitely deserved the win.”

Final score: Cooper City 21, South Broward 61
