At 6:30 on Thursday, February 16th, the boys varsity lacrosse team warmed up for their third game of the season. Thirty minutes later, the Cowboys took their positions on the field to face the Flanagan Falcons. The boys won the game with a score of 16-5.

The Cowboys hit the field, ready to take on the Falcons. When the first whistle of the game blew, sophomore Kadin Schillo won the faceoff and took it down to goal. The Cowboys moved the ball around to each person on attack once and then started testing the defense. Schillo received the ball back and took a shot to the corner of the goal, scoring the first goal of the game. Flanagan won the next face off and took it towards the Cowboys defense. They moved the ball around until freshman Erik Rozanski pushed a Flanagan player out of bounds, gaining possession for the Cowboys. Rozanski threw it to the midfielders who ran it down to the attack. The Cowboys continued to move the ball around the defense. Junior Anthony Carmona took a shot into the upper corner of the goal, making the score 2-0. Cooper City dominated the faceoffs, bringing it back down to Flanagan’s defense. Carmona had the ball and noticed that senior Craig Barr was open. He passed it and Barr took a shot on the goal, making the score 3-0.

The boys came out with more energy after the first quarter. Schillo won the faceoff once again and passed it to Carmona who moved the ball around. Barr had the ball in his stick when sophomore Jack O’Malley was wide open. Barr passed him the ball and O’Malley had a hard shot to the side net of the goal, scoring the fourth goal of the game. Flanagan won the next two faceoffs and scored two goal as a result (4-2). Schillo won the next face off and ran it down to the attack. O’Malley beat his defender and Schillo passed it to him. O’Malley shot to the upper right corner of the goal, making the score 5-2. Flanagan won the faceoff and brought it towards the Cooper City defense. One of the Falcons took a shot from far out and senior Brogan Ness saved it. Ness cleared it to the midfielders who took it down to the attack. Barr had the ball and took a shot from far out, hitting the left corner of the net perfectly. Flanagan gained possession next, but Rozanski knocked the ball out of the players stick and threw it to the attack. Flanagan gained possession back and one of the players ran through five of the Cooper City players, scoring Flanagan’s third goal. Schillo won the next faceoff and took a shot on goal but missed. Schillo got the ball back but was tripped by a Flanagan player who received a foul. He threw it to Carmona, who took a shot and missed. The Cowboys still had possession and schillo threw the ball to Barr, but he dropped it and Flanagan took the ball down. The Cowboys held their defense and Schillo won the ball from the Flanagan player, only to get tripped again. He passed it to senior Luke O’Malley who shot it to the upper left corner of the goal. Schillo took the next face off, and senior Justin Croye picked up the ground ball and passed it to Carmona. “When we hit the field we go all out, there’s no in between,” said Croye. “We play hard for the person next to us with one common goal which is to succeed.” Carmona took his shot on goal and made it. Flanagan gained possession of the ball and took a shot which went right under the goalie. The Falcons started to win the ball more and scored another goal right before the half ended. The Cowboys were winning at halftime with a score of 8-5.

The Cowboys came out stronger than they did in the first half, determined to score more goals. Barr won the first face off and ran it down to the attack. Barr noticed that O’Malley was open and passed him the ball. O’Malley placed the shot directly over the goalies head, making the score 9-5. Carmona took the next shot and hit the pole. The Cowboys continued to take shots but missed several of them. Barr took the next faceoff and won it, running the ball all the way down to the goal. Barr attempted to run the ball in but was fouled by two Flanagan players. He took a shot at the lower left corner of the goal, scoring the tenth goal for the Cowboys. O’Malley received the ball once again after the faceoff and shot it above the goalies head, making the score 11-5.

The boys were giving their all and not allowing and Flanagan players to score. Flanagan won the faceoff and ran it down towards the Cooper City defense. They took several shots but missed every single one. Junior Giodanni Dattilio hit the ball out of a Flanagan players stick and ran the ball down. He passed it to Luke O’Malley who then passed to Jack O’Malley, scoring the next goal of the game. Cooper continued to take shots, but missed several. The Cowboys won the rest of the face offs, and pushed it down to the Flanagan defense. Senior Matthew Okun took a shot on goal and made it, making the score 13-5. The Cowboys scored three more goals after that and refused to let Flanagan to score any.

Cooper City and Flanagan lined up to shake hands when the final whistle blew. Despite the loss, Flanagan showed good sportsmanship and the Cowboys showed that in return. The Cowboys have a lot of talent on their team, and show that on the field. “I think that the team is going to do really well this year,” said junior Tyler Lewis. “We have worked really hard this season and it is showing in the games.”
