The Cooper City Cowboys had a home game against the Archbishop McCarthy Mavericks on Thursday, March 16th. This was their second time playing each other, and Archbishop was able to take home the win.

The Cowboys ran out onto the field, determined to beat the Mavericks this time. The boys got ready for the faceoff and put their sticks down. Archbishop quickly picked up the ball and won the faceoff, moving the ball towards the attack. An Archbishop player made a bad pass and the ball went out of bounds, giving the Cowboys possession. Senior Craig Barr received the ball from a defender and ran it down towards the attack. Barr saw freshman Kadin Schillo open and passed him the ball. Schillo placed the ball above the goalies head and scored the first goal of the game. Archbishop won the next face off and ran it down to the attack. One of the players took a shot and missed, giving the Cowboys possession once again. Schillo received the ball and ran it all the way down to the attack. He took a bounce shot from far out and scored the second goal of the game. Archbishop started to become irritated and the coach called a timeout. Schillo took the faceoff and won it, passing it to Barr. Barr passed it to junior Anthony Carmona who then passed it back to Schillo. Schillo passed the ball to junior Ashton Bosse, who threw the ball to Carmona. Carmona took a hard shot at the goal, making the score 3-0. The boys lined up for the faceoff, but Cooper City got called for a false start, giving Archbishop possession of the ball. An Archbishop player ran the ball down and took a shot from far out, placing the ball right above the goalies head and scored. Archbishop won the next faceoff and took it down towards Cooper City’s defense. The Cowboys defended extremely well, stopping three shots on goal. Schillo received a pass from the goalie and ran the ball down. An Archbishop player tripped Schillo and a foul was called, giving Cooper City possession. Schillo passed to Barr, who then got the ball taken. Archbishop moved the ball down to the attack. An Archbishop player took a shot, but the ball bounced off of a player’s helmet. Archbishop still had possession and took a shot on goal, but senior Brogan Ness saved it. The Mavericks gained possession back and were passing the ball around. Freshman Erik Rozanski forced the player with the ball out of bounds, giving Cooper City possession. Ness received the ball and passed it down the field to Carmona. Carmona took a shot from far out and placed it in between the goalies legs, making the score 4-1.

Archbishop came out strong, winning the first faceoff of the second quarter. The player ran the ball down and took a shot from far out, but Ness saved it. Ness passed it to Schillo, but Archbishop quickly won the ball back, bringing it down and scoring a goal. Schillo won the next faceoff and passed it to Barr. Barr took a shot and missed, but Cooper kept possession. Schillo made a roll dodge around a player and took a shot but missed. Bosse picked up the ground ball, keeping possession for the Cowboys. Bosse passes to Schillo who then took a bounce shot from far out, making the score 5-2. Archbishop won the next faceoff and moved it down, scoring another goal. Archbishop won the next faceoff and passed it around the attack. A player took a shot and it went in, but the referees called it “no goal” because an Archbishop player pushed a Cooper City player into the net. The Mavericks were able to keep possession and score another goal before the half ended.

The score of the game was tight, and both teams came out strong. Archbishop won the faceoff and moved it down to the attack. They took two shot and missed both, but still had possession. A player took a third shot and made it, tieing up the game. Archbishop won the next face off and ran it down, but Schillo defended well and took the ball from a player. He ran it down and took a shot, but the ball hit the pipe and bounced off. Cooper still had possession and continued to challenge the Mavericks. One of the players took a shot and missed, giving Archbishop possession of the ball. The Mavericks passed the ball around the attack, waiting for an opening on goal. A player took a shot and placed it above the goalie’s head, making the score 5-6. Cooper City won the next face off and ran it down. Archbishop was able to strip them of the ball, run down, and score another goal.

Archbishop began to dominate towards the end of the game, challenging the Cowboys. They won the faceoff and took it down, scoring a quick goal. Schillo won the next faceoff and brought it down for the Cowboys. They passed it around and remained patient, waiting for an opportunity. O’Malley received a pass and took a bounce shot from far out, making the score 7-8. The game went back and forth, and neither team was able to score again. “I think we did really well against Archbishop compared to last time,” junior Tyler Lewis said.
