After about an eight month break, season six of Glee premiered last Friday. Seeing as I’ve been a very big fan of this show for a long time, a ‘Gleek’ if you will; this was way too long of a break. I was expecting an incredible, breathtaking premiere going into it. I was, however, very disappointed.
Glee used to bring tears to my eyes every single episode. Season six, so far, just seems…boring. They opened the premiere episode with Rachel Berry’s (Lea Michele’s) new show being cancelled, her going back to her home in Lima, Ohio, and just giving up. What happened to her being in Funny Girl on Broadway? The next thing you know, she runs into Blaine Anderson (Darren Criss) and he tells her that him and Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer) broke up! PLOT TWIST. They were engaged the last episode of season five. Already you can tell the writers just ran out of events to occur in the show. Glee used to be so popular, but everyone stopped watching after Corey Monteith, who played Finn Hudson, died. We all know why…now.
In the end of season five, all of the old main characters were living together in New York City. Now, everyone’s back in Ohio. I don’t get the sudden change of location, but I was just getting used to the new environment without Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) and her reign in McKinley High School. In this first episode, they’re trying to bring back their beloved glee club that Sue cancelled once the majority of the original members left and they lost their Regional competition with Finn as their coach. It seems like the writers just really wanted to bring actual “glee” back to the show, but why? The real glee to me is just the group of them together, not the literal club at their old high school. This part kind of annoyed me. Now, what about NYADA? That musical arts university they all died trying to get accepted to? They’re just gonna drop out to save a bogus club at their old school?
Don’t get me wrong, the plot of the opening episode may have been poor, but the musical aspect of the show did not disappoint one bit. I have over 99 Glee songs on my phone, and after this episode I plan to add around six more. The tunes they chose fit perfectly into the show, and Michele even sung “Let It Go” (which is originally sung by Idina Menzel, who played her mom in the show). Interesting, right?
Just because this opener wasn’t the best doesn’t mean I’m going to give up on a show that has made me feel over 100 emotions at once before. This show means so much to me and I have hope for the rest of the season. Season six is going to be it, the end, and that’s a very scary concept for us Gleeks. Keep your eyes and ears open for the very rest of Glee, as well as the music that comes with it. I have a feeling it will be an exciting surprise to us all.
