With all the summer TV shows coming to a close, many new ones are posed to take their places for the upcoming season. Many of these new shows face a common problem of breaking into the market. The initiation of a program can be faced with positive reviews, but sometimes the show doesn’t circulate enough attention. The first season of any series is often a difficult obstacle and this season, many new anticipated shows are put to the test.

Premiering October 13 on the CW is a new twist to the classic teenage pregnancy story. Jane the Virgin stars quirky Gina Rodriguez as a young, innocent Latina with a serious problem- she’s been accidentally inseminated by her doctor. To make matters worse, Jane is a virgin who has vowed to remain pure until her marriage to her longtime boyfriend, played by Diary of a Wimpy Kid’s Brett Dier. Of course, that’s not enough to make Jane’s life complicated. The biological father just so happens to be a former crush of hers, who is now married. Jane the Virgin’s comedic angle coupled with such a unique spin on such a popular topic could warrant it a large audience, however, there’s also a possibility that it could soar in popularity in the first few episodes before losing stamina. Either way, the show undoubtedly does provide light-hearted humor to a rather serious topic and is definitely worth at least checking out.

Another new show on the ever-popular CW channel follows the growing zombie craze trend. Forget 2013’s Warm Bodies, iZombie is the newest addition to the world of the undead. Premiering on September 24, the show stars Once Upon a Time’s Rose McIver as Liv Moore, a former medical assistant turned zombie that figures out a way to put her new undead condition to use. After a long and hilarious turn-of-events, Liv discovers that eating brains actually gives her the person’s memories. This revelation leads her to become an undercover detective, solving crimes with a tool that only she has access to- first-person account of the incidents. iZombie also happens to be one of two new DC Comic shows on the CW, and finds itself a complicated enough underlying plot to perhaps last a few seasons. Expectations of the show are positive, so it is definitely one worth catching, if zombies are your thing.

While this new show won’t be out until the mid-season break, The Messengers has an intriguing plot-line so far, yet details about the show, including a trailer, have not yet been released. In a nutshell, the show seems to revolve around four random individuals who are affected by a mysterious object landing on Earth. Given unimaginable powers as well as an undeniable bond with one another, these four characters set out on a biblical prophecy to stop the Rapture. Though The Messengers is far from the average superhero story-line, the plot seems to be overly complicated and perhaps unnecessary. With more details, expectations of the show could change, but for now, it’s too soon to predict the success of this one.

Premiering on October 7 is one new show that has raised much anticipation and high expectations. The CW’s The Flash is a spin-off of the popular series Arrow as well as DC Comics’ second new show for the upcoming season. Grant Gustin stars as Barry Allen, a brilliant, yet awkward scientist for the Central City Police Department that accidentally receives superhuman speed when exposed to a particle accelerator explosion. From his marvelous acting job in Arrow, it’s safe to assume that Gustin will bring witty charm to the character of Allen and many eager audiences would agree. Both the teaser trailer followed by a recent full trailer are highly praised and, from current expectations, the show looks to be a hit.

Only time will tell if any of these shows will actually make it in the TV world, but from the looks of it, all hold a certain promise. Check out each of the new shows on the CW channel as they premiere over the next few months.
