Cooper City High School held Pistol Pete mascot tryouts on September 3 and 4, to find someone who can fulfill the role of promoting school spirit at sporting events and pep rallies by being energetic and outgoing.

Pistol Pete is not only our mascot, but also the icon of school spirit at events, making the tryouts a crucial part of life at CCHS. During the meetings and interviews for students who were interested for the position, goals for Pistol Pete this year were discussed. CCHS’s mascot is often spotted at football games or pep rallies, but the school hopes that he’ll cheer on other sports teams this year. Another topic that was touched on during the tryouts were the requirements of Pistol Pete, including having spirit to get the crowd pumped, and, of course, having a flexible schedule.

“Our goal this year is to have Pistol Pete go to all of the sports games like baseball and volleyball to spread school spirit,” Principal Wendy Doll said.

In total, there were ten people who tried out for the role of Pistol Pete. All of the participants gathered together in Doll’s office to demonstrate their school spirit. Each student’s application, however, will remain confidential.

“I want to play Pistol Pete because he plays such a pivotal role on many high school students’ experiences when it comes to the football games, or pep rallies, and he is the icon of our school,” an aspiring Pistol Pete said. “I think it would be a great opportunity to assume the role as Pistol Pete, and if nothing else, it looks like a great amount of fun.”

Now that the role of Pistol Pete has been filled, there are many things that the student body of CCHS should expect from this year’s anonymous icon. Other than seeing him appear in the football games, he will attend other sporting events, like volleyball and soccer, in an addition to his other responsibilities. CCHS hopes that this year, Pistol Pete will lead the school to a new era of incredible school spirit.
