The Cooper City High School varsity girls volleyball team took on the Flanagan Falcons in their final district game of the season on Tuesday, October 12 at CCHS. The Cowboys swept the match with three straight wins, not letting the Falcons go into the double digits with scores of 25-9, 25-8, and 25-6.

During the first game, the Cowboys used their tactical offense to keep the Falcons from scoring as little as possible. Cowboys, led by juniors Miriam Swartz and Alex Kerbel, triumphed over the Falcons defense.  The Falcons began to come back towards the end of a game thanks to a serving rally by sophomore Hannah Gonzalez, but the Cowboys returned the ball well and were able to win the game 25-9.

The second and third games basically went along the same lines, and the Cowboys continued to shut down the Falcons with their offense. While the Falcons did have some good blocks thanks to their middle blockers, the defense wasn’t able to return the Cowboys’ hits, and that’s what hindered their performance. The Cowboys went on to win the second game 25-8, and the third game 25-6

The standout players in this game were sophomore Heather Lockwood, junior Rachel Blaize, and senior Shelby Nix. Lockwood led the Cowboy defense with 16 digs, and also added eight service points. Blaize was the leading scorer on the offensive end for the Cowboys with five kills, twelve service points, and five aces. Nix, the Cowboys’ setter and senior captain had 15 assists, nine service points, and two kills.

This win has secured the Cowboys a spot in the district championship with the fourth place seat, knocking the Falcons out of the running for the title of district champions.
